Competition Guidelines - Choral

Choral Performance Categories
Mixed Chorus • Men's Chorus • Treble Choir • Chamber/Madrigal Choir • Gospel Choir • Show Choir • Jazz Choir

Each school may enter a maximum of three choral performing groups for competition.

Two experienced adjudicators will judge each festival performance.

Concert Classifications:
Mixed Chorus, Men's Chorus, Treble Choir, Chamber/Madrigal Choir and Gospel Choir

High School groups will be classified according to school enrollment with no requirement for elementary, middle or junior high schools, which will compete only against each other. If more than one group from a high school or middle/junior high school is in the same category, the second group must be entered in Open Class.

Division E - Elementary Schools (K - 5)
Division I - Middle and Junior High Schools
Division I Open - Middle and Junior High Schools
Division II - Senior High School Enrollment of 600 and below
Division III - Senior High School Enrollment of 601 to 1,100
Division IV - Senior High School Enrollment of 1,101 and above
Open Class Division -Senior High Schools

Requirements:
Each group will perform one warm-up (if desired) and two compositions of the director's choice suitable for festival use. There will be no sight reading or required numbers. Each group will be allowed a maximum of fifteen (15) minutes to set up, perform and clear the stage.

Equipment:
Musicale makes available an announcer's microphone, piano, music stands and standard three-step choral risers. No special lighting will be provided.

Classifications:
Show Choir and Jazz Choir

Elementary, Junior High and Middle School groups will compete only against each other. Show choirs will perform show and jazz literature with choreography. Jazz choirs will perform jazz literature without choreography.

Division E - Elementary Schools (K - 5)
Division I - Middle and Junior High Schools
Division II - Senior High Schools

Requirements:
Groups will be judged on total performance. There will be no sight reading or required numbers. Each group will be allowed a maximum of twenty (20) minutes to set up, perform and clear the stage.

Equipment:
Musicale makes available an announcer's microphone, piano, music stands and standard three-step choral risers. No special lighting will be provided. Show/Jazz choirs must furnish all equipment, including sound system with microphones.

Competition Guidelines - Instrumental

Instrumental Performance Categories
Concert Band/Wind Ensemble • Orchestra • Jazz/Stage Band • Guitar Ensemble

Two experienced adjudicators will judge each festival performance.

Concert Classifications:
Band/Wind Ensemble and Orchestra

The grade level of music performed will determine the classification of all middle, junior and senior high schools with the exception of Open Class. If the grade level is not the same for each piece selected, the group must go into the lowest grade level or Open Class.

Junior high and middle schools may select any grade level of music or Open Class. They will compete only against each other

Division E - Elementary Schools (K-5)
Division I - Middle and Junior High Schools
Class A - Grade 1 Music
Class B - Grade 2 Music
Class C - Grade 3 Music
Class D - Grade 4 Music
Class F - Grade 5 Music
Open Class - Any Grade Level of Music Accepted

High Schools
Division II - Grade 2 Music
Division III - Grade 3 Music
Division IV - Grade 4 Music
Division V - Grade 5 Music
Division VI - Grade 6 Music
Open Division - Any Grade Level of Music Accepted

Requirements:
Two compositions are required to be performed by each group. The NBA Manual, the state list or any accredited listing will be used in choosing compositions. Sight reading will not be required. Any orchestra consisting of less than 10 strings will receive a rating only and will not be eligible for competition.

Equipment:
Musicale will provide music stands and chairs, podium, piano, chimes, xylophone, four timpani, concert bass drum and marimba.

Concert Classifications:
Jazz/Stage Band

School enrollment will determine the classification of senior high schools. Elementary, junior high and middle schools will be classified separately and will compete only against each other.

The movement of bands from their qualifying division will only be permitted to a division with greater enrollment. Each school may enter more than one jazz band; however, the second group must enter Open Class

Division E - Elementary Schools (K - 5)
Division I - Middle and Junior High Schools
Division II - Senior High School Enrollment of 801 and Below
Division III - Senior High School Enrollment of 802 to 1,301
Division IV - Senior High School Enrollment of 1,302 and Above
Open Class Division - Second Group Only

Equipment:
Musicale will provide an electrical receptacle, piano, chairs and stands.
